Innovation Academy Fundamentals

Innovation Academy’s proposed purpose and structure was intended to become a regional STEM school that will best educate our students so that our region will achieve economic stability and competitiveness in the future.  The name of our school, “Innovation Academy,” guided our research and brainstorming in order to select thematic units that would drive our curriculum planning.  We started by researching top innovations of all time and the innovations that have impacted human society.  A key component of a STEM school is technology, and the path to creating, understanding, and appreciating technology is engineering.  Great technology is only available through engineering and innovation.  Our STEM curricular units reflect this and are available to view in the link below.

At Innovation Academy, our students will study subjects through an integrated approach that will enable them to see all knowledge as connected, rather than separated into discrete disciplines.  Our teachers have developed lessons that include projects that will encourage our students to explore and question, think critically, solve complex problems, and communicate effectively in a digital world.  STEM professionals, such as Eastman and Domtar chemists and engineers and Wellmont health professionals often visit our classrooms to increase our students’ learning potential.   With this type of engaged and authentic learning, we hope to ignite a desire within our students to further their education in a STEM field.  Our goal at Innovation Academy is to provide the best learning environment possible to prepare our students with the skills necessary to be successful as a STEM professional…

Innovation Academy is a Platform School of the Tennessee STEM Innovation Network (TSIN), a unique public-private collaboration between the Tennessee Department of Education and Battelle Memorial Institute designed to promote and expand the teaching and learning of STEM education in K-12 public schools across Tennessee.
