Special Education

Sullivan County special educators comprise a cohesive team of professionals who work collaboratively and individually to address the unique learning needs of students who qualify for services.

We are committed to educating students with disabilities in regular classes to the maximum extent appropriate. School multidisciplinary teams give careful consideration to the design and implementation of effective Individual Education Programs. In addition, the district provides a full continuum of special education program models:

Sullivan County Schools is dedicated to locating, identifying, and evaluating all children, ages three through twenty-one, who have disabilities and may need special education and related services.

For Children Not Yet Enrolled in Public School (Ages 3-5)
If you know of a child, age three or older, who lives in Sullivan County and may have a disability, but is not currently receiving special education services, please contact the Sullivan County Schools Special Education Department at 423-354-1585 for more information and to begin the referral process.

For Children Attending Public School
If your child attends a Sullivan County public school and you have educational concerns, please contact your child's school principal or the Special Education Department. A Student Support Team (SST) will review your concerns and may develop and implement interventions within the general education classroom. The team will collect data to determine the effectiveness of these interventions and, if necessary, may recommend a referral for a comprehensive special education evaluation.

For Children Homeschooled or Attending Private School
If your child is homeschooled through the Sullivan County School System or attends a private school within Sullivan County and you have educational concerns, please contact the Special Education Department at 423-354-1585 to discuss a referral for special education services.
